OUR LEADERSHIP VISION
As an ambitious individual dreaming of becoming a musician, a band or artist looking to broaden appeal, you are already in an inenviable position.
That is; making a decision to either become a musician or succeed in the music industry as a group is the equivalent of navigating an endless mine field wrought with unanticipated dangers that will challenge your greatest enthusiasum or threaten to destroy it all together.
My late mother, Isabel Rodriguez, once said, "you must work at listening or you will never hear."
Of course, you can do what we've all done at least once, completely ignore a parent's advice, confident that you know enough to fly solo.
Think about examples in your life when you chose to disregard good advice and the price you paid later for what you thought you knew but didn't.
Are you prepared to continue taking unnecessary risks?
If so, good luck. You're on your own.
Few succeed that way but you may be one of the lucky ones.
My late father, Master Sergeant, Frank Rodriguez, Jr., was a dedicated U.S. Army soldier (Korea-Vietnam) for thirty-nine years. He was a decorated American war hero. A proud part of his army career was spent at THE BIG RED ONE, Fort Riley, Kansas.
I once asked my father why he named me 'Douglas.' He answered, "I named you after General Douglas MacArthur because he bucked a flawed system to make sure my brothers and I returned home, alive."
My father wasn't recommending rebellion or any sort of mutiny. He was stressing the importance of leadership, one's ability to recognize an inherent problem and their willingness to demonstrate courage in bringing about the desired or pragmatic result.
General Douglas MacArthur was fired by former President Harry S. Truman. Despite his perceived insubordination, General MacArthur stood tall among his fellow soldiers, the American people and America's friends throughout the world.
Competent leadership was more important to him than his political or civilian standing. He was willing to think 'outside the box.'
Recently, my Uncle Joe, another U.S. war hero who served in Okinawa, passed away. He represented the last of many WW II U.S. war veterans in my family. I couldn't help recalling how General MacArthur once spoke of the passing of his fellow soldiers. He said, 'Old soldiers never die; they just fade away.'
So how do we honor all who have served or are serving our great nation, their wives and families while applying my mother's scholastic wisdom and my father's brilliant observations to this network?
We must ask ourselves what we want to accomplish. What role we are willing to play in getting where we want to go and how do we intend to plot a path upon which we shall travel to arrive at our destination?
